I'm not sure about the reasons for this issue. I guess it's the media. Magazines, TV. Apparently lots of 10 and 11 year old boys now wear aftershave. What's that about!? All kids on one level are desperate to grow up and love to roll play as adults. Maybe there's a point where the parents shouldn't indulge them.
-Anon

So did I neglect to think about parental responsibility in all of this? Or did I just neglect to think about how the media affects the parents. I am not laying this, or anything on the media, but I just want to question the issues surrounding it. Of course it is not all the media’s fault. So if I were to think about how advertisements contribute, should I be looking at the ad’s aimed at the adolescents in kids magazines, or simply the ad’s that are aimed at the parents?
I will be exploring various advertisements: http://www.myblodworldlia2.blogspot.com/

Comments: Child 'Sexualisation'- The Media or Advertisers fault?

Your premise seemed to be based on the rationale that "the media" is to blame for the "sexualisation" of younger and younger children. The media is made up of newspapers, magazines, radio and television. With the exception of a small sector of the magazine market, I do not see this trend being pushed by newspapers or television.
The culprits are the marketing men with their advertising. The photograph attached to this email is typical. They see it as a cash-laden sector that can be exploited. Of course, based on the assumption that the kids themselves do not have disposable income, it is the parents who bear the responsibility of paying to dress their children in this way.
It's called parental responsibility. And too many parents do not want to accept this responsibility, and give in to kids' pester power as a result of this slick commercial pressure. Please don't lay this issue at the door of the media.
-Anon
